Michael & Susan Dell Foundation
The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation is Michael and Susan Dell’s family foundation, established in 1999. The foundation is based in Austin, Texas and has offices in both India and South Africa.
The Dell Foundation is inspired by its founders’ shared desire to transform the lives of children living in urban poverty.
The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation provided USD 44 million for development in 2021. Compared to 2020, this amount represents a decrease of 30.1% in real terms. Grants represented 67.5% of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation’s gross disbursements, while 32.5% was extended in the form of standard loans and equity investments.
In 2021, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation provided all its development finance through bilateral channels, notably non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and civil society (USD 24.3 million), Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) and the private sector institutions (USD 15.2 million) and universities, research institutes or think-tanks (USD 4.5 million).
In 2021, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation’s development finance was primarily focused on India and South Africa. USD 30.4 million was allocated to India (69.1% of gross bilateral development finance) and USD 13.6 million to South Africa (30.9%).
Accordingly, all development finance of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation targeted middle income countries: 69.1% lower middle income countries and 30.9% upper middle income countries.
Sectors
In 2021, more than two-thirds of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation’s development finance was allocated to social infrastructure and services. Investments in this area accounted for 69.5% of the foundation’s development finance (USD 30.6 million), with a strong focus on support to education (USD 23.8 million) and health and population (USD 5.9 million). Contributions to economic infrastructure and services totalled USD 13.4 million (30.4%), primarily focusing on financial & business services.
