Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation
The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation is a US-based foundation established by Gordon E. Moore, co-founder of Intel, and his wife, Betty I. Moore, in 2000. Driven by the founders’ vision, the foundation creates positive outcomes for future generations through scientific discovery, environmental conservation and patient care.
The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation focuses on local and international causes. Development-related grantmaking is primarily administered through its Environmental Conservation Program.
In 2021, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation’s development finance was primarily focused on America. USD 32.6 million was allocated to America, accounting for 33% of the foundation’s development finance, followed by Oceania (USD 6.4 million; 6.5%) and East Asia (USD 2.1 million; 2.1%). A sum of USD 57.7 million (58.4%) was unspecified by region in 2021, mainly including multi-regional programmes.
In 2021, 28.4% of development finance went to the top 10 recipients. The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation’s most significant recipients included Brazil (USD 10 million), Colombia (USD 7.5 million) and Peru (USD 3.6 million). Moreover, 71.6% of development finance was not allocated by country.
The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation allocated the highest share of its development finance (26.7%) to upper middle-income countries in 2021, followed by lower middle-income countries (1.7%) in 2021, noting that USD 70.7 million (71.6%) was unallocated by income group.
Furthermore, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation allocated USD 1.4 million to small island developing states (SIDS) in 2021, equal to 1.5% of its development finance. This financing represents the foundation’s support to Vanuatu.
Sectors
In 2021, more than half of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation’s commitments were allocated to multi-sector. Investments in this area accounted for 61.3% of its commitments (USD 71.2 million), with a strong focus on support to general environment protection (USD 62.3 million). Contributions to production sectors totalled USD 36.6 million (31.5%), primarily focusing on agriculture, forestry, and fishing (USD 32.7 million).
Sustainable Development Goals
In 2021, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation committed the largest shares of its contributions to the goals on partnerships for the goals (SDG 17), life on land (SDG 15), life below water (SDG 14) and sustainable consumption and production (SDG 12) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. Contributions to climate action (SDG 13) totalled USD 33.7 million.
