Citi Foundation
The Citi Foundation was established in 1998 by Citigroup. The foundation partners with over 250 community organisations across more than 80 countries and territories to tackle social, economic and environmental challenges.
The Citi Foundation’s purpose is to promote economic opportunity for low-income individuals and communities worldwide. The foundation focuses on efforts that increase financial inclusion and economic opportunities for youth and on activities that create solutions for challenged communities. The Citi Foundation aims to strengthen and bring together local stakeholders. Its financial support is mainly directed towards civil society.
In 2021, the Citi Foundation provided USD 4.1 million to the multilateral system, representing 20.9% of its development finance, all of which was earmarked for specific countries, regions, themes or purposes.
The Citi Foundation channelled its multilateral aid through the United Nations (UN) system and OAS.
The UN system received USD 3.7 million from the Citi Foundation in 2021. The most significant UN recipients were UNDP (USD 2.2 million), IOM (USD 1 million) and UNICEF (USD 0.2 million).

In 2021, the Citi Foundation’s development finance was primarily focused on the Americas and East Asia. USD 9.1 million was allocated to America and USD 6.6 million to East Asia, accounting respectively for 46.5% and 33.9% of development finance. A sum of USD 0.8 million (3.8%) was unspecified by region in 2021.
In 2021, 35.9% of development finance went to the top 10 recipients. The Citi Foundation’s most significant recipients included Mexico (USD 2 million), Colombia (USD 1 million) and Indonesia (USD 0.8 million). Moreover, 38.7% of its development finance was not allocated by country.
Least developed countries (LDCs) received USD 1.3 million (6.9%) of Citi Foundation’s development finance in 2021. The Citi Foundation allocated the highest share of its development finance (32.3%) to upper middle-income countries in 2021, followed by lower middle-income countries (22.1%) in 2021, noting that USD 7.6 million (38.7%) was unallocated by income group.
Sectors
In 2021, more than half of the Citi Foundation’s development finance was allocated to social infrastructure and services. Investments in this area accounted for 87.6% of the foundation’s development finance (USD 17.1 million), with a strong focus on support for education (USD 16.3 million). Moreover, humanitarian assistance amounted to USD 1.2 million (6.4%) in 2021.
